This section provides information on saving and opening documents in another file format.

Saving a document in another file format

To save the current document in another file format, choose the ribbon command File | Save as and open the dropdown list Save as type. Select the desired format, enter a different file name if required and confirm saving.

Opening a document in another file format

To open a document in another file format, use the ribbon command File | Open (click directly on the icon itself) to open the file dialog box, open the dropdown list of file types and select the format in which the file is available. Then select the desired file, and confirm that you want to open it.

Supported file formats

In the dialog boxes for opening and saving documents, the list of file types includes the following file formats:

Document

The in-house format for Write documents in which you usually save documents (name extension: .tmdx).

Template

Document template for Write documents (name extension:.tmvx). For more information, see Document templates.

Microsoft Word

You can also open and save documents in Microsoft Word file format. The program supports .doc files (Word 6.0 to 2003) as well as .docx files (Word 2007 or higher).

OpenDocument Text

Documents in the file format "OpenDocument Text" (.odt) can also be opened and saved. This enables data exchange with programs such as OpenOffice Writer.

Write 2016

Documents are saved in the file format of Write 2016, an older version of Write (name extension: .tmd).

Rich Text Format

The RTF format is very suitable for document exchange. It understands all basic text formatting and can be read by many other programs.

HTML

Documents are saved in HTML format. For more information, see Notes on the HTML format.

Text file

Plain text file (without formatting)

Text file with additional options

Same as above. Before the file is opened/saved, however, the program opens an additional dialog box in which you can make advanced settings with respect to the file format (for example, change the character set). For more information, see Notes on the text format.

Write/DOS (open only, available on Windows only)

This opens a document that was created with Write for DOS version 3.0 or higher. (Saving in this file format is not possible.)
