QR codes/Barcodes

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

In Write, you can use the ribbon command Insert | QR Code/Barcode frame to generate linear barcodes or even QR codes by yourself and insert them into the current document.

Linear barcodes contain a series of lines with different widths, as you know it from articles of daily use (food, books, tickets, etc.).

QR codes, on the other hand, are primarily used to encode URLs that can be opened by reading them with a scanner. In practice, you can use this format, for example, to issue invoices to your customers including a QR code. After scanning the code, the customer will be taken directly to the web page you have defined.

All types of codes you create in Write can be scanned with a common scanner app directly from the screen or even after printing the document. Use the scanner integrated in almost any smartphone, for example.

To create and insert your own QR code/barcode, proceed as follows:

1.Choose the ribbon command Insert | group Objects | QR Code/Barcode frame qrcode_icon.
2.In the dialog box that appears, select at Type whether you want to generate a QR code or one of the available linear barcodes. For explanations of the different types, see "Dialog box options" below.
3.Enter the desired URL, text, or number in the field below.
Note: For the types Barcode EAN-13 and Barcode EAN-8, you can only enter numbers.
4.Click on Insert. The QR code or barcode is now inserted as a picture frame.
You can then move or resize the frame:
To move it, click on the picture frame with the mouse, and then drag it (while still holding down the mouse button) to the desired position.
To adjust its size, drag one of the round handles surrounding the picture frame.

A picture frame is allowed to easily cover existing text – this is then automatically wrapped in such a way that it flows around the frame.

Tip: Picture frames can still be subsequently converted into a picture that is embedded in the body text without a frame and vice versa using the ribbon command Convert, see Converting between frame and embedded object.

Options of the dialog box

After choosing the ribbon command QR code/barcode frame qrcode_icon, you will have the following types of codes in the dialog box to select from:

QR code

A QR code is a two-dimensional code that can accommodate large amounts of data. You can enter all numbers and characters here and there is no limit on the length at the input.

Barcode128

The Code128 is an alphanumeric bar code with high data density. You can use numbers and characters of the ASCII code here and there is no limit on the length at the input.
The Text option can only be selected for this type. If it is enabled, the entered text is displayed below the barcode. If the option is disabled, the display of the text is suppressed.

Barcode EAN-13

A code EAN-13 code is a numeric bar code. There are 12 digits required to enter, for the 13th digit a checksum is automatically generated and added at the end.

Barcode EAN-8

A code EAN-8 is a numeric bar code. There are 7 digits required to enter, for the 8th digit a checksum is automatically generated and added at the end.

Changing properties of QR code/barcode objects

An inserted QR code/barcode is actually nothing more than a picture frame. To change the properties, right-click on the object and select Picture properties from the context menu. In the dialog box that appears, switch to the QR code/Barcode tab, there you can change the type of barcode and the data for URL, text or number.

You can use the Export button to save a copy of the barcode on your hard disk under any name. The dialog box "Save as" appears for this purpose.

All other options of the dialog box (or on the contextual ribbon tab Picture) correspond in most parts to the properties of picture frames as described in the section Picture frames.

If you have converted the inserted QR code/barcode into a picture that is embedded in the normal body text, you will find the descriptions for adjusting the picture properties in the section Pictures.
